New Visitor Parking at SR 94/Millar Ranch Rd

A new parking area to improve access to our trails!

parking lot diagram 512

The San Diego National Wildlife Refuge has been working with the Federal Highway Administration and the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) to construct a 0.9-acre gravel-surfaced parking lot in an area to the east of the steel bridge and Sweetwater River, west of Millar Ranch Road, and south of State Route (SR) 94.
It is designed to accommodate approximately 43 vehicles, including five large-vehicle pull-through spaces and two Architectural Barriers Act (ABA)-compliant spaces. The new parking area will improve visitor access to the Refuge trail system, including the Sweetwater River Regional Trail, and support the Refuge’s current and future interpretive and environmental education programs.

To ensure safe access from SR 94 into and out of the parking lot, several improvements will be implemented:

  • a new westbound, left-turn lane from SR 94 onto Millar Ranch Road;
  • lengthening and improving the existing eastbound, deceleration right-turn lane from SR 94 onto Millar Ranch Road; and
  • providing a new eastbound right-turn acceleration lane from Millar Ranch Road onto SR 94.

The project will be constructed with funding provided by Federal Lands Access Program (FLAP). The intent of FLAP is to improve transportation facilities that provide access to, are adjacent to, or are located within federal lands.
